Marlijne’s Diary in Krabbels

So I’m writing Marlijne’s Diary in Scrivener. As I’m used to. Scrivener is great. Scrivener is the best. Ok, I’m quite good at Word. I could use Notion for writing as well. It’s great. I even could use Ywriter or Google Docs. But I’m writing in Scrivener. Because I like the program.

But I’m writing for Krabbels. Krabbels.net is about the making of Ryker’s Challenge. That hasn’t changed of course.

On the second bar on top, I made a spot for her diary. In Krabbels Marlijne will write in her own handwriting (Vladimir Script) her own life events. She has neat and precise handwriting. Like the teacher she is. And yes, I’m fully aware that Vladimir Script doesn’t read as easily as any Serif or Sans Serif font. The reader has to put some energy into it. The font size of 22pt ensures that the text is clear and readable, even without reading glasses. The paper of her diary is a kind of broken white, and she writes with a fountain pen, using blue/grey ink (specifically, ijzer-galnoten ink that she purchases from Akkerman).

Organization of the diary

My initial approach was to convert every page of the diary into a Krabbels page. But that is not practical if the diary is 20,000, 30,000 words or more. So I changed tactics. I will make the index page with the dates that Marlijne has written. True, that could be quite a lot of dates as well, but that’s what I’m going for now. I stubbornly want to hold onto the idea of seeing her girly handwriting on the diary paper.

Technical problems

Technical difficulties persistently eat away at my time, diverting my focus from more important matters, such as writing.

  • WordPress cannot import a Word/Scrivener document. It’s only possible to import an image.
  • Word cannot save a file as an image (.jpg or .png). So I found a work-around in Libre Office. This free version of Word CAN save a file as a .png-file.
  • The .png file takes up a lot of bytes so WordPress takes some 5-10 seconds to load the image.
  • I convert the .png file online to a .webp-file and import that file into my Krabbels.net site.

I know. Why bother?
Did I mention I was stubborn?
